POSITION: OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY SPECIALIST
DEPARTMENT: GOVERNANCE, RISK & LEGAL

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To design, implement and maintain Namport’s Occupational Health & Safety strategies, system, policies and procedures to enhance organizational occupational health and safety, emergency preparedness and ensure compliance to international standards such as ISO 45001 and relevant statutory requirements. The position reports directly to the Manager: Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) and supervises a team of SHE Officers.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
Implement, monitor and maintain the Namport occupational health & safety management processes and system for the well-being of employees and contractors thereby supporting a safe working environment and positive safety culture.
Design and implement critical safety controls across the operations and see to it that a system is put in place that allows for the monitoring and verification of the critical controls.
Coordinate with supervisors and employees regarding safe operating procedures and the management of written standards and procedures.
Lead and participate in detailed incident investigations and root cause analysis and manage non-conformance and corrective action.
Plan and facilitate all health & safety internal audits as well as Port User audits in consultation with relevant key players.
Direct industrial hygiene monitoring and foster improvement methods in all Industrial Hygiene areas.
Coordinate with site teams to continually improve health and safety performance through the identification of risks and opportunities. Manage, review and assess health & safety data as a tool for continuous improvement.
Conduct and lead risk management by performing hazard evaluations, risk assessments, and initiates corrective actions and controls for correction.
Develop, implement emergency procedures, systems and strategies and continuously evaluate risks associated with ports and activities.
Accountable for insurance management through effective investigation, reporting and finalization of all insurance claims to Company brokers.
Advice on, and facilitate the execution of identified strategic or special initiatives within the department.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, or Industrial Hygiene or equivalent.
At least five (5) years related experience in the Occupational Health & Safety field, of which two (2) years should have been at specialist and/or supervisory level.
A record of strong safety performance and familiarity with implementing established safety systems in line with ISO 45001.
Extensive experience and knowledge of safety and health compliance, monitoring and reporting.
Code BE Driver’s License.
Must be conscientious, critical thinker, with exceptional auditing and problem-solving skills.
Well-developed logical and reasoning skills with an ability to think forward, anticipate change and act accordingly.
Sound verbal and written communication skills.
Risk management skills.
